Emergencies in dental surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction: Patients' negligence and difficult access to healthcare have an impact on the worsening of emergency conditions, which require immediate treatment due to the possibility of exacerbation in a short period of time. Untreated intra- and extraoral abscesses can have serious consequences on the patient's health and in many cases are life-threatening conditions increasing risk of respiratory obstruction, thrombophlebitis, meningitis, mediastinitis and septicemia. Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the pandemic and the resulting impediments to accessing medical care on the incidence and type of emergencies in the Oral Surgery Department. Material and methods: This was a retrospective study of 85375 patients aged 2 months to 90 years old with diagnosed intra- and extraoral abscesses before COVID-19 pandemic (2018,2019), and during pandemic (2020, 2021) in the Department of Oral Surgery of the Medical University in Lublin. The obtained results were statistically analyzed with the use of a computer program. Conclusions: The fewest patients were admitted in 2020, and the most in 2021, where we can already see the effects of the pandemic. Emergencies occurred most frequently in people aged 21-30, then 31-40. In 365 cases, tooth extraction was performed, and only in 28 cases, root canal treatment was attempted. Conclusions. Oral health service provision has been significantly affected by COVID-19. Patients came to their appointments too late, which in most cases resulted in the necessity of tooth extraction without attempting root canal treatment.

Patient's Resilient Efforts in the Rampage of Coronavirus Experiences of Covid-19 Patients: A Qualitative Study

Background: Being infected with the new Covid-19 disease in addition to physical risks, leads to difficult and different psychological ex periences due to the nature and specific features of the disease. Successful patient management requires a compre-hensive understanding of patients' experiences. This study was conducted to explain the experiences of patients with Covid-19 using content analysis approach. Material/ Methods: This is a qualitative study with a conventional content analysis approach. Purposeful sampling was performed in 10 Ja-nuary to 25 April 2021with the participation of 10 patients with Covid-19 referred to convalescent home No. 1 in Zahedan southeast of Iran. Semi-structured interview was used to col-lect data, which was analyzed according to the steps pro-posed by Graneheim and Lundman method. Result(s): Data analysis resulted in the formation of a main theme;"pa-tient's resilient efforts in the rampage of coronavirus", as well as three categories and7 subcategories. The main categories included;the basis for spread of coronavirus, breaking free from fears under the protection of spirituality, and mutual support between patient and family. Conclusion(s): It seems that patients with Covid-19 were trying to resist the coronavirus by resorting to spirituality and family support, so the "patients' resilient efforts in the rampage of coronavirus" was identified as the main theme of this study. COVID-19 nurses' experiences of caring: a qualitative study

Introduction: Nurses at the frontline of providing direct care to COVID-19 patients are at risk of infection, exposure to severe physical and mental challenges and stress, which can have negative consequences for patient care. The nurses' experiences can be useful for planning a safe healthcare system in the face of infective pandemics. So, their experiences should be used to identify and solve the related problems, because by using the experiences of these nurses, the relevant problems can be identified. Aim of the research: This study aimed to describe COVID-19 nurses' experiences of caring. Material and methods: This qualitative content analysis study was conducted on 10 nurses of the COVID-19 ward of the educational Amir Al-Momenin Hospital from 10 May to 30 August, 2020 in Zabol, southeast Iran. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using the Graneheim and Lundman approach. Results: The present qualitative content analysis was conducted on 10 nurses of a COVID-19 ward. The following main themes and sub-themes were included: COVID-19 nurses' experiences of caring, multiple aspects of caring for COVID-19 patients, the challenges and requisites of COVID-19 care, and the fear of being infected by the virus and the nurses' protective self-care. Conclusions: The results show the importance of taking care of patients, meeting the existing safety challenges and being able to take good care of themselves.
